Everyone asks, “will practicing GYROTONIC® exercise make me lose weight”? I can only speak to my experience of losing 45 pounds I began practicing. Weight loss is not a targeted objective of the method, but it can be a strong contributing factor if that is your goal.
I began by just wanting to have a stronger, more flexible, fit body without all the aches and pains I was experiencing as I got older. Right away I began to be so much more aware of my body, and those places where there was more of me than I cared to have. When I saw a something tempting (cookies are my downfall) I often just thought, nah – my body doesn’t really need that. And I dropped a couple 4 or 5 pounds. I was already connecting mind and body.
Then I decided I needed to actively pursue weight loss. I knew I was a person who needed clear direction if I wanted to change my eating habits. I found a website called https://www.beyonddiet.com. The owner provides a detailed, unique 30-day meal plan with recipes for every meal and snack. She tells you exactly what and when to eat and provides the grocery list. She uses great spices, and the recipes are easy.
My husband and I followed this for about 45 day. I dropped another 7-10 pounds. In the process my taste for food changed. Things that I had craved before just weren’t appealing. From that point I simply continued trying to keep my diet sensible and I gradually lost weight without a focused effort. I do weigh myself everyday and adjust if I see that I have gained 3 pounds from a weekend splurge.
The next biggest drop came when I did my pre-training course at 67. Pre-training consists of 180 hours, generally spread out over three weekends, learning all the GYROTONIC® movements before you can start training to become an apprentice and teach others. I lost another 7 pounds during the 3 weeks. If I had known how profoundly this intense work would impact me, I would have done it earlier. Going on to become a teacher is not required.
Like anything else, you get out of something what you put into it. It is impossible to practice the Gyrotonic method without being more aware of your body, and that is likely to lead to weight loss.
